Exploring Taman Negara
Taman Negara is a rainforest in Malaysia, and apparently one of the oldest rainforests in the world as it has never been destroyed by an ice age, volcanoes, logging, etc, making it 130 million years old. We spent a full day walking around close to park headquarters, going on a canopy walk (it's the longest and tallest in the world), and visiting an aboriginal tribe in the afternoon. The Orang Asli tribe that we visited are allowed to stay in the park and hunt and whatnot, like Native rights at home. They are particularly interesting because they have the appearance of African or ... Guinean (?) people, with the tight curly hair and dark skin, whereas everyone else in SE Asia has the straight Chinese hair. They still go out to the jungle to hunt, although over the past 10 years have become relatively settled, instead of nomadic.
The coolest skill we learned from them was how to shoot a blowpipe! And we are even bringing one home to show all of you our new found talent.
